Starting retinol: a slower routine actually works better

Retinol is one of the most studied ingredients for texture and fine lines, but it's also the ingredient people abandon most often — usually because of redness, peeling and irritation in the first few weeks.
Start slower than you think you need to
Twice a week at night, for the first two weeks, is enough — even if the bottle suggests daily use. Apply to fully dry skin, and follow with a moisturiser to buffer the effect while your skin builds tolerance.
The purge is real, but it's short
Some initial dryness and flaking in weeks 2–3 is expected as skin cell turnover increases. This settles once your skin adjusts — usually by week 4–6. If you see significant redness or burning, that's too fast, not a sign to push through.
Non-negotiable: sunscreen
Retinol increases sun sensitivity. A broad-spectrum SPF 50 every morning isn't optional while using it — skipping sunscreen is the single most common reason people end up with worse pigmentation instead of smoother skin.
Timeline to expect
Meaningful changes in texture typically show from week 8–12 of consistent use. Retinol rewards patience far more than any other active — resist the urge to increase strength or frequency before giving it that time.
