Body acne on chest and back: what actually helps
By Dr. Fatima Sheikh (MD, Dermatology) · 22 Apr 2026 · 5 min read
Chest and back acne gets far less attention than facial acne, but it's extremely common — and the thicker skin and larger pores in those areas mean facial products often aren't concentrated or formulated to reach them effectively.
Why body acne happens
The back and chest have a higher density of oil glands than most of the face. Sweat, tight or synthetic clothing, and leaving sunscreen or conditioner residue on the skin after a shower are all common triggers specific to the body.
What works better on the body
Salicylic acid (a wash-off BHA) in a body wash or spray format is generally better tolerated on the back and chest than leave-on facial treatments. Benzoyl peroxide washes are also effective but can bleach dark-coloured towels and clothing — use white ones.
Habits that make a real difference
Shower immediately after sweating rather than staying in damp clothes, apply any body treatment to clean, dry skin, and switch to looser, breathable fabrics during a flare-up.
When to see a dermatologist
Deep, painful nodules or acne that scars easily is a sign for a proper consultation — these respond to prescription-strength treatment far better than anything over the counter.
